S-Anon now has a presence on TikTok, a video sharing social media app, which is the #1 app downloaded in the United States and the 6th most-used social platform in the world. People who use the app want to watch videos, similar to YouTube, not to engage with others. TikTok is less interactive than most other social media because it is primarily used for entertainment and to learn about topics; S-Anon TikTok will not allow users to comment on our content.

This foray into the social media world is part of the overall plan to increase the number of people who visit sanon.org. Each S-Anon TikTok video is about 30 seconds long and can be viewed by anyone using the app. The videos use stock footage with actors, not actual members of S-Anon.

The Public Information & Outreach Committee (PIOC) is overseeing the pilot phase of this project which will run through June 2023. Snippets from Conference Approved Literature and stories from the S-Anews are being used to create the content. The PIOC approves the scripts; then a PIOC videographer creates the video using that content. The messages are aimed at those who are unfamiliar with S-Anon or sex addiction and are under 35 (25% of visitors to the S-Anon homepage are under 35).

The PIOC will gather usage data to analyze how many people link to www.sanon.org via the app, and how many times the videos are shared. A final report will be presented to the Board of Trustees in June 2023, which will be used to determine whether the project will continue.

These videos have been added since July 1:

  • I’ve Been Betrayed
  • Why We Don’t Need to Fix the Sexaholic
  • I’ve been Hurt by Sex Addiction
  • Keep Comin’ Back
  • Marcus’ Story
  • I’m Alice R
  • Just Like Taking a Shower
  • Reasons Why We’re Smiling
  • Here’s the Truth

New videos are added weekly and can be found on TikTok at @sanon_family_groups.

How You Can Help

Popularity on TikTok grows as more people view and share a video. You can help our TikTok presence grow by subscribing yourself and watching any or all of the videos through to the end since TikTok recommends videos that have a high watch time/completion rate. And, while you’re watching an S-Anon TikTok, click the red heart to show that you liked what you saw. This helps the video ratings, too. Consider letting others know about these videos or share them with your friends. Note that other people cannot see who likes a video but “followers” is public. See the Service Literature on Anonymity for more on anonymity considerations.

Disclaimer: The intention of this article is not to promote TikTok, but to inform the fellowship of a new tool S-Anon is using to attract additional members.
