Greetings S-Anon Family and Happy 35th Anniversary!

We were asked to share with you the history and importance of our Seventh Tradition Appeal. We both have had the privilege of participating with others on the S-Anon Archives Committee. While compiling historical information, we recognized some interesting patterns. One of these patterns involves S-Anon’s financial stability. Learning how to become financially responsible was necessary, but complicated.

Issues related to S-Anon’s finances were prevalent for a number of years in our early history. Members chose to loan money to S-Anon so bills could be paid. Office staff volunteered to delay receiving a pay check. Publication of literature was delayed more than once due to insufficient funds. The S-Anon International Committee members (SIC), the precursor to the Board of Trustees (BOT), volunteered to make a monthly Seventh Tradition donation to cover half the cost of their monthly conference calls.

Thankfully, some 35 years later, our World Service Office is not only flourishing, but is helping countless people find help and hope. Today, the primary source of income for our fellowship is Seventh Tradition donations and literature sales, but our financial health can be an ongoing challenge. Please consider supporting our fellowship by giving an extra financial gift to the WSO. If we all support the WSO, S-Anon will continue to be available to those seeking help for many years to come.

Yours in Service,

Robin M and Vicky L

Dear S-Anon Members,

As a child I was told, “Never discuss age or money in polite company.” Times have changed, and at age 46 I discovered the rooms of S-Anon. Hindsight’s always 20/20, but how I wish I’d found recovery in my younger years!

While I’m thankful for my S-Anon recovery, I’m extremely grateful for the healing and personal growth my children gain through the S-Ateen fellowship.  S-Ateen members attend face-to-face meetings in Israel and Spain, at International Conventions and local recovery events across the United States. They also connect on weekly voice meetings via the S-Ateen Online Community and Skype.

When it comes to money, our meetings are free and giving to 7th Tradition collections is optional. So how does this all work if members aren’t required to pay, and yet the S-Anon World Service Office operates like any other business with expenses, balance sheets and budgets? The answer is simple: as with our personal recovery, our fellowship is spiritually based. In a spiritual economy, we only keep what we willingly give away. Even more of a conundrum, we typically get more in return than what we give, no matter the gift.

As such, will you prayerfully consider a financial gift to S-Anon’s World Service Office? Your generous giving ensures meetings are accessible and supported through one cohesive organization, offering both young and old a safe place to find help and healing — today and into the future.

Thank you and God bless,

Allie H.

Dear S-Anon Members,

It is often said the newcomer is the most important member in any gathering. Before the newcomer actually attends a local meeting, however, multiple proceedings typically occur. First off, there has to be a way for the newcomer to learn where and when the local group meets. Additionally, there is literature to be printed, the S-Anon website to be maintained, phones to be answered when inquirers call, and much more. These behind-the-scene actions ensure the S-Anon message of help and hope is there when needed. This important work can only occur, however, if we support our World Service Office (WSO).

I think we can all remember the pain that brought us to our first S-Anon meeting. Help and healing was available thanks to those who came before us — S-Anon members like you and me, who generously gave of their time, talent, and treasure to build up the S-Anon fellowship. As our fellowship continues to grow, our help is needed more than ever. It’s the collective effort of all members that sustains the S-Anon fellowship, whether it is service in your local group, service beyond the group level, and/or donations to support the service work of other members. Together we can do so much more than each of us can do alone.

As you explore the many ways to participate in helping our fellowship grow, I ask you to consider making a financial contribution to the World Service Office. Please donate from the heart and remember the priceless gift the S-Anon program offers each and every one of us. Contributions can be easily made through the S-Anon online store at www.sanon.org.

Blessings,

Tami H.

Dear S-Anon Members,

Want some ideas on how to grow membership in your local S-Anon group? Good news! The Public Information and Outreach Committee has been hard at work this past year creating a guide for just this purpose. We hope that this guide will become a vital resource for S-Anon groups to put into practice Step Twelve, “carry(ing) the message to others” in their communities.

In many ways, carrying the message of recovery is the backbone of this fellowship. Where would we be today had members who preceded us not served S-Anon through outreach, developing literature, or making financial contributions?

Through the collective participation of all S-Anon members, we can ensure that the hand of S-Anon is available to all seeking help from the pain and shame experienced because of sexaholism. During this Special Appeal, I ask that you consider those who are looking for help but have yet to find it. With member donations, S-Anon is able to continue to invest in and create service literature like the Public Information and Outreach Guide that builds upon a foundation of hope developed decades ago.

Three times a year, the Special Appeal gives us the opportunity to support the outreach work of S-Anon.  It is Step Twelve service in action, and we know the need is great. In honor of your own recovery and for those yet to come, please make a donation today. You can give online through the S-Anon online store.

Blessings,

Robin A.

October 2017

Dear S-Anon Members,

When you first heard about this program, did you have a hard time remembering how to pronounce “S-Anon”?  I know I did! “S-A-Anon” or “S-Al-Anon” or “Sa-non”… it’s quite impressive how creative I was able to get.

Having never been exposed to 12-Step programs prior to S-Anon, there were many new terms that, surprisingly, have become integrated into my normal speech, often to a point where I assume others understand exactly what I am saying… Higher Power, sexaholism, and 7th Tradition Donations, just to name a few.

At the S-Anon World Service Office, we often are asked, “What exactly is a Special Appeal?” when these triannual requests for donations are mailed out. We have realized that we casually use the term “Special Appeal,” often forgetting that to many, it’s either a new concept or only vaguely understood.

The Special Appeal is a request to the Fellowship for additional donations outside the regular 7th Tradition contributions that members provide to the WSO. These monetary gifts provide an income boost that supports both everyday operating expenses and, most recently, helps fund special projects, such as the development of the S-Anon Recovery Blog (now available on the newly revamped S-Anon website!) and the recently published Traditions One, Two, and Three booklet.

On average, only 12% of S-Anon groups answer this appeal for additional support, so just imagine what the impact would be if all 330 S-Anon groups participated! No amount is too small. Please consider making an extra contribution today.

Blessings,

Lindsay White

Executive Director

June 2017 Special Appeal & WSO Update

Please read this Special Appeal at three consecutive meetings.

Dear S-Anon Members,

My first encounter with S-Anon was through a newly formed group in my country.  At the time, there were only a few members who had come to admit unmanageability and the awareness that we too needed a program of recovery.

We began to meet, hoping to find answers for which we had been looking blindly for so long. We read fragments of a first draft of the only book translated in Spanish. We read and shared, but we were stuck. I wondered if that was all the help I could find in this fellowship.

We found hope in contacting World Service Office. They provided us with a suggested meeting format, instructions in registering our group and locating other groups and CAL. They put us in touch with members who could offer guidance. The WSO helped us to grow and share our recovery with others.

Today I choose to freely give what freely has been given to me by financially supporting the WSO. I understand the meaning of being “self-sufficient” with a healthier point of view. I can apply it in my individual finances and then transfer that experience, strength and hope to the financial stability of my group through regular and special contributions.

Dear Fellow S-Anon Members:

Our Seventh Tradition says that member donations are needed to keep S-Anon going. But how much should members drop in the basket when it comes around?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.  Some give two or three dollars, as they have for years.  Some contribute keeping in mind what they once spent reacting to and trying to control the sexaholics in their lives.  Others, like me, find the largest bill in their wallets and toss it in.

Gratitude for this lifesaving program and the desire to help S-Anon be here for the newcomer—that’s why I open my wallet at every meeting. And that’s why I send a check in response to each Special Appeal.  As you read this letter, please reflect on the benefits you have received from S-Anon. Think about what you typically donate at each meeting, and then consider giving a little more. Please consider supporting the fellowship with a Special Appeal donation in the coming months so the office can continue to carry the message of hope to those who need to hear it.

In Fellowship,

A Grateful Member of S-Anon

October 2016 Special Appeal & WSO Update

October 2016

Dear Fellow S-Anons,

When I attended my first S-Anon meeting ten years ago, I remember entering the room feeling fear, anxiety, pain, and confusion about the recent discovery of sexaholism in my life. I was met with smiles, and given the Newcomer Booklet. At the meeting, we read member stories out of the “Blue Book” (S-Anon Twelve Steps.) The shares seemed to mirror my feelings and I left that meeting with the hope that S-Anon could help me.

Literature published by S-Anon has one purpose: to help family and friends of sexaholics recover from the effects of another person’s sexual behavior. Conference Approved Literature (CAL) is written by S-Anon members and reviewed by many prior to publication. It aims to present solid, solution-oriented recovery ideas. Our literature explains how S-Anon members have used the program to help themselves. Reading CAL helps keep our thoughts on track, while introducing us to new insights and ideas that we can apply to our own lives.

CAL has played such a large part in my personal recovery process that I was moved to join the Literature Committee. This service has shown me that without the support of S-Anon members, our fellowship—and CAL—would cease to exist. Members write, review and approve CAL. Member contributions pay for the production of CAL and pay the salaries of the WSO staff who process CAL orders. Members purchase CAL for themselves and their groups. Please consider a donation to the WSO to help keep CAL available to those who need it.

In peace and service,

Angela M.
Literature Committee Chair
